The former East End kingpins Ronnie and Reggie Kray are set to be brought back to the big screen, with Tom Hardy set to take on both roles.

The film, titled Legend, is being directed by Brian Hegleland who is known for the critically acclaimed LA Confidential. Rumoured to have a 2015 release date, the film documents the rise and fall of the notorious London gangsters. British stars Christopher Eccleston and David Thewlis, Australian actress Emily Browning and A Bronx Tale’s Chazz Palminteri are also confirmed as part of the cast. Inevitably, this film will be compared to its predecessor, the 1990 biopic entitled The Krays, directed by Peter Medak which was well received by critics and movie goers alike.

This latest film is reportedly based on John Pearson’s novel, The Profession of Violence, which documents the relationship between the brothers, their criminal associates, celebrities and lovers. At the height of the swinging 60s, the Kray Twins were, in their own words, “untouchable”. They ran a nightclub in the east end and ended up rubbing shoulders with politicians and big names like Sinatra, Judy Garland and The Kinks. Despite their criminal activities and violent nature, they become celebrities, beloved by the common man and despised by the law.

However, the law eventually caught up with them when they were arrested and charged with the murder of Jack “The Hat” McVitie, though many other corpses have been laid at the Krays feet over the years. Ronnie, who was thought to have suffered from a severe mental illness, died in prison in 1995. His brother, Reggie, was released on compassionate grounds in 2000; he died from cancer 8 weeks later.

Speaking to the BBC when he was confirmed for the roles, Hardy said, “I’ve got to work out how to play both twins, which will be fun. It’s another experiment and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself, I just want to have some fun and see what’s out there and explore with the work.”
